Chile

For most of my life, I have wanted to live in another country.  Not because I needed escape from the United States; but rather because I needed to see how other people live.  I have two parents who lived in other countries and it just seemed natural to have a taste of that experience.  Within the past few years, I had a serious wanderlust attack and decided to put my dream into action.

In true Millennial fashion, I thought I would try to go to Spain and galavant around Europe for a year. I would take siestas and drink wine and eat cheese and be generally great.  As I began to work for and with community-oriented organizations, I realized I needed to go somewhere that would allow me to grow personally and professionally.  The wine and siestas seemed fabulous; however, I began to change my focus to less common corners of the globe.  So after much research and great assistance, I started working on my TEFL certification so that I could teach English.

In July 2015, I took my fresh TEFL certification and 46 pounds of my personal items to Santiago, Chile.  My fabulous friend is with me on this journey of exploration and discovery.  This is the space where I share our adventures, as well as things I’ve learned along the way.

        I am thinking about either going to Algarrobo or Santiago, and I just was wondering do you have any recommendations on things to see or do. Also how safe is it is there being a black person? I have read mix reviews online and I am trying to get an up-to-date opinion on the situation. Thanks!

        So the only thing I know about Algarrobo is the extremely huge pool – largest pool in the world I believe. I never went because I heard it was extremely touristy and you needed to stay at least 3 nights in one of the private condos to even get admission to the pool. In Santiago there’s plenty to do! I would suggest taking the lift to the top of Cerro San Cristobal if the weather is good, or visiting Pablo Neruda’s house if you prefer to be indoors. Make sure you spend some time in Barrio Bellavista – lots of nice shops and eateries. Of course you’ll need to try a terremoto and pastel de choclo. If you have time to get out of the city, I’d suggest Vina Del Mar for the beach, about a 2 hr bus ride from Santiago.

        Sorry forgot to answer your question about being black in Chile, it’s awkward and they stare at you, might ask you ridiculous questions. But overall not inherently dangerous
